Miss 2:15 a.m.

Many of you wrote to me in reaction to the Calvin Cotton blog. Many more of you called me at the newsroom. I think a few of you may have visited my home but I haven’t proved it yet. I’m getting a security system installed.

Special thanks to the unnamed man who left a message referring to me as a “liberal prick” and to the woman who threatened to have me run down in the street if I don’t lay off the Cotton family. You both hold a special place in my heart.

I’m most interested in hearing back from the woman who left a message on my machine at precisely 2:15 a.m. the morning of Oct. 3. This woman, apparently a store clerk, claims she has footage of Calvin Cotton driving away from her store with a woman that looks like his wife Bethany.

Pretty common stuff. Except if this store clerk is to be believed, the footage was captured four days after Bethany’s death.

So you can see why I’d be excited to hear from her again. She left no name, no number, no way to reach her. She has not called back. Please, Miss 2:15 a.m. Please, please call me back. Or write. Or anything. I’ve had great success with video footage since I started this Cotton chase. I’d like a little bit more.

A store clerk swiping a tape from a surveillance camera. A sure way to lose a lucrative position at the Circle K. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Not to mention the moral and legal obligation the clerk has to turn the tape over. It’s potentially evidence in a crime, specifically burglary and abuse of a corpse.

You get the feeling that Nilan is trying to FORCE reality to mimic the LaFlamme novel now.
